Vino Extraordinario-- The Wines of Jorge Ordoñez

Join us this Friday, March 30th, as we taste through a selection of Jorge Ordoñez wines with Dickie Mallison of Galaxy Wine.

Jorge Ordoñez is a revolutionary. When he entered the wines business in the late 80’s, Spanish wine was in a sorry state—epitomized by dusty Rioja’s and cheap sherry. His radical approach? Update traditional methods, lower yields, and promote better (modern) winemaking practices. Simply put, Ordoñez set out to preserve the wine’s heritage and Spanish character while coaxing them into the 21st century. What’s more, Ordoñez took the bold step of challenging the American palate by being the first to introduce exotic wines like Albarino, Txakoli and Godello to a market that knew little more than sangria.

A few years ago, Jorge’s sister, Victoria, joined with him to make Botani, from Muscatel grapes grown in the arid mountains above Malaga in Southern Spain. For centuries, Muscatel from this area has been dried for raisins or fermented into sweet wine. Botani is a revelation—a beautiful, aromatic, delicate, and dry wine with a note of minerality. Last winter, during our trip to Spain, Luan and I visited the winery for a barrel tasting with Victoria- one of the highlights of our trip to Spain (and pictured above).

Stop by the shop 4:30 to 6:30 this Friday and let Jorge Ordoñez Wines highlight your day.
